Korean lessons in Salthill: prices and progress

Korean is taught by few schools, so most learners in Salthill work with a private tutor: €35 to €50 an hour in person when one can be found nearby, €12 to €30 online with a native speaker. Group courses run occasionally in universities and cultural associations in Connacht.

The good news is hangul: the alphabet can be learnt in a weekend. After that, a tutor works on pronunciation, sentence endings and levels of politeness, which matter much more in Korean than in English.

TOPIK and the Korean working holiday

The TOPIK, the official Korean proficiency test, is split into TOPIK I (levels 1 and 2) and TOPIK II (levels 3 to 6); universities in Korea usually ask for level 3 or 4. Sessions abroad are limited, so learners in Galway City check dates and centres well in advance.

Young Irish adults can apply for a working holiday visa in Korea: a few months of lessons before leaving make the year far easier, from renting a room to making friends at work.

Korean tutors: three ways to make progress

One session a week over the year

The most common rhythm for adults: it keeps motivation alive and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.

A boost before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, centred on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation, to dare to speak

No textbook: you talk about your daily life, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

Korean tutors in Salthill: frequently asked questions

Can I learn Korean by watching K-dramas?

Dramas train your ear and give you vocabulary, but they rarely teach structure or politeness levels. Combine them with a tutor who explains what you hear and makes you speak; progress is much faster that way.

How long does it take to reach TOPIK level 3?

From zero, most adults need around one and a half to two years of regular study, with two lessons a week. Learners who already read hangul and follow series without subtitles get there sooner.
