Portuguese lessons in Highwood: prices and what to expect

Fewer schools teach Portuguese than Spanish or French, so most learners in Highwood turn to a private tutor: €30 to €45 an hour in person, €10 to €28 online. Group evening courses exist in some colleges and universities, usually in the larger cities in Connacht.

The first lessons work on pronunciation, the nasal vowels and the sounds that change between Portugal and Brazil, then on everyday conversation. If you already speak Spanish, a tutor will build on it and warn you about the false friends.

European or Brazilian Portuguese: which one to choose

Ireland has a large Brazilian community, so many learners in County Sligo choose Brazilian Portuguese to speak with colleagues, friends or family. Those heading to Portugal, Madeira or the Azores prefer the European variety, which sounds more clipped.

Tell your tutor which one you need from the first lesson. For certificates, the CAPLE exams (Portugal) and the Celpe-Bras (Brazil) are the two references, and an online tutor can prepare either.

Portuguese tutors: three ways to make progress

One session a week over the year

The most common rhythm for adults: it keeps motivation alive and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.

A boost before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, centred on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation, to dare to speak

No textbook: you talk about your daily life, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

Portuguese tutors in Highwood: frequently asked questions

Is Brazilian Portuguese very different from European Portuguese?

They are the same language with different accents, some vocabulary and a few grammar habits. Speakers understand each other without difficulty. Learn the variety you will use most; switching later takes a few weeks of listening.

How quickly can a Spanish speaker learn Portuguese?

Very quickly for reading and writing, often within a few months. Speaking and listening take longer because of pronunciation. Many Spanish speakers reach a comfortable B1 in Portuguese within six months of weekly lessons.
